The solid edges that cover the perimeter of your door are referred to as the door lipping. The door lipping can be trimmed, however, trim tolerances will vary depending on the door style, manufacturer, use and location. Standard doors have the largest trim allowances when compared to external doors and fire doors which have more restrictive tolerances. This is owing to their necessity to comply with fire protection regulations or providing reliable weather resistance and offering better levels of security.
All our door products have lipping information detailed in the 'Product Info' section, where available. However, not all of the door lipping can be trimmed away, so if you're not sure about your door's trim tolerances, please contact us and we'll be happy to help.
We always strongly advise that you refer to the door manufacturer's recommended finishes and follow all the necessary preparation advice provided with your paint, varnish or oil. At Door Giant, we offer a wide range of pre-finished/fully finished and primed doors from an array of trusted manufacturers to suit the requirements of your latest project.

We don't recommend using external timber doors inside your home. External doors are built from timber with a higher moisture content, which makes them more prone to warping or twisting when exposed to warm, centrally heated indoor environments. They're also typically thicker than standard internal doors, which can cause fitting issues with regular door frames.
Unfortunately, we don't offer bespoke door sizes at this time. All of our doors are supplied in standard UK sizes as listed on the product pages. However, many can be trimmed to fit—please check the product specifications or get in touch if you need advice.
A door's finish refers to its surface treatment, and there are three main types to consider: pre-finished, primed, and unfinished.
The door construction refers to the type of material used in the manufacturing of your door's core. From solid core to hollow core - all doors can have a different core construction - each playing a vital role in your door's essential properties, such as weight, strength, durability, fire safety, soundproofing and insulation.
Engineered Solid Core (Most Durable)Engineered core doors are made up of multiple softwood and hardwood layers that are pressed and adhered together in different directions to create a solid, stable and durable construction. A high-grade real wood veneer is then applied to the door to create a beautifully finished appearance. Typically, the wood veneer will be thicker on external doors to preserve its appearance.
Engineered Semi Solid Core (Medium Durability)A blend of solid core and hollow core elements. A semi-solid core door consists of a solid core frame with an internal honeycomb structure. The semi-solid core design is a great balance between solid core doors and hollow core doors to give you a good mix of strength, soundproofing, affordability and a lighter-weight feel.
Hollow Core (Lightweight & Affordable)An inexpensive and very popular choice. A hollow core door is an interior door with a foam or honeycomb frame, all covered by a slim wood or fibreboard layer. Although these doors have reduced strength, durability and insulation properties, they are highly suited to a wide range of interior door fitting jobs where a lightweight, low-cost and easy to install door is required.
Solid Wooden Doors (100% Natural Wood)A solid timber door is made entirely from natural wood and consists of timber pieces assembled into a frame with rails and stiles to create a rigid door structure. Made from solid hardwoods like oak or reliable softwoods such as pine, these doors are a traditional, long-lasting and sturdy choice with a unique, rich and intricate grain pattern to catch the eye.
Our metric-to-imperial door conversion chart will allow you to instantly convert internal door sizes and external door sizes using the most common standard units of measurement.
At a glance, you'll be able to compare metric measurements (millimetres) with imperial measurements (feet, inches) to precisely work out which door is right for your latest door fitting project.
Using our door conversion chart will help to minimise door measurement errors; reducing the risk of purchasing the wrong door size, and allowing you to accurately and efficiently plan out your next door installation with greater confidence.
All dimensions displayed in this door conversion chart are expressed in a 'height x width' format.
