In most cases, the answer is no.
Many people assume that if their front door is starting to show signs of wear, it can no longer keep out the cold. However, draughts are often caused by other issues, ranging from worn thresholds to loose hinges and damaged door handles or hardware. Before investing in a replacement door, it is worth evaluating your existing entrance to see whether a few simple, cost-effective upgrades can be implemented quickly to restore your door to its prime.

To find the right solution, you must first determine the source of the draught. A simple way to do this is the tissue test. Close all nearby windows and doors. Take a tissue (or a piece of paper) and allow it to hover around your closed door. Slowly move the tissue around the frame, threshold, and letter plate, taking notice of any slight movement. If the tissue moves noticeably in a particular area, you've identified a potential source of where air is leaking into your home

Draughts around the frame can often be reduced by replacing worn or damaged door weather stripping, while gaps underneath the door may require attention to the threshold or a door-bottom seal. Draughts around the letterbox or keyhole may require replacement or adjustment of the relevant hardware.
Draughts around the door frame are usually caused by either the door no longer sitting correctly in the frame or a door seal that has compressed, split, or perished over time. Always address alignment first, as new weather stripping won't work properly if the gaps are uneven.
With the door closed, inspect the gaps around the head and both jambs. You're looking for a consistent, even clearance. If one corner is tight and the opposite corner has a visible gap, the door may have dropped or twisted slightly. Also, pay attention to how the latch engages.
If you need to lift the handle to lock, or the latch doesn't click cleanly into the keep, you may be dealing with alignment rather than a simple sealing issue.

Over time, loose or worn hinges can cause your door to drop slightly, creating uneven gaps around the edges. Tighten all hinge screws (start with the top hinge). Repair any loose screw holes in the timber before refitting (for example, with hardwood dowel and wood glue). Inspect the hinge knuckles for movement; worn hinges can allow the door to move when it's windy.

If the door is correctly aligned and the hinges are secure, but there is still a draught through the door, it usually means the weather stripping around the frame has become compressed, damaged, or has worn over time. Replacing it with a new compression seal is one of the quickest ways to reduce air and water ingress without compromising the closure of your door.
